A misdemeanor is seen as a minor criminal act in the legal system.  When being charged with a misdemeanor an individual is not considered a felon, but it is seen as a simple arrest. Misdemeanors are crimes such as petty theft, prostitution, public intoxication, public urination, simple assault, disorderly conduct, trespass of private property, vandalism, and minor drug possession.

Depending on specific state regulations generally a misdemeanor is punishable by a fine, but can also receive jail time (max time is one year and served in a local jail), probation, community service, and loss of license.
